“... Campbell's skills and emotional draw are second to none.” - All About Jazz
With a voice described as "soaring" and "supernal," Peter Campbell has been performing for over thirty years. From cabaret appearances with fellow young performers from the worlds of theater, film and television, Peter went on to work in commercial jingles and to cabaret performances from New York to New England and the Midwest. He has performed throughout Toronto since relocating to Canada from his native New York City in 2012. His work has been broadcast on radio stations across Canada, the U.S. and internationally, including CBC/Radio-Canada, JAZZ91.FM, NPR and Rádio Movimento.
Peter's 2017 release Loving You: Celebrating Shirley Horn received critical acclaim both in Canada and internationally. The album garnered inclusion on several lists of the top jazz recordings of 2017 and was nominated for a 2018 Independent Music Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
In 2020, the album Old Flames Never Die was released to stellar reviews and received an "Editor's Feature" in the June 2020 issue of JazzTimes magazine. In January 2021, Old Flames Never Die was included on the JazzTimes Critics List of "Top 40 Jazz Releases of 2020." It is both the only recording produced in Canada as well as only one of two vocal recordings to be recognized by this prestigious publication in that year.
Haunted Melody will be released on 12 September 2025 and features some of Canada's finest musicians (and contributions from acclaimed American saxophonist Joel Frahm and Portuguese producer, composer and musician Ernesto Leite). On this and previous recordings, Peter has enjoyed a creative musical relationship with GRAMMY® and JUNO® Award winning recording engineer John "Beetle" Bailey.
With extended stays in Lisbon, Portugal over the past four years, Peter Campbell has collaborated with Portuguese musicians such as Ernesto Leite, Rogério Godinho, Fernando Tavares, Ruben Almeida and Maria Viana. His love of Brazilian music and the Portuguese language is reflected on several tracks from Haunted Melody.
Peter holds a B.A. in Art History from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and an M.A. in the History of Design and Curatorial Studies from Parsons The New School for Design / Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (New York, NY). He studied voice for many years with the late Joyce McLean of the Juilliard School (New York, NY).
